Luke 2: ⁸That night in the fields near Bethlehem some shepherds were guarding their sheep. ⁹All at once an angel came down to them from the LORD, and the brightness of the LORD'S glory flashed around them. The shepherds were frightened. ¹⁰But the angel said, "Don't be afraid! I have good news for you, which will make everyone happy. ¹¹This very day in King David's hometown a Savior was born for you. He is Christ the LORD. ¹²You will know who he is, because you will find him dressed in baby clothes and lying on a bed of hay."
¹³Suddenly many other angels came down from heaven and joined in praising God. They said: ¹⁴"Praise God in heaven! Peace on earth to everyone who pleases God." ...
    ¹⁷When the shepherds saw Jesus, they told his parents what the angel had said about him. ¹⁸Everyone listened and was surprised. ¹⁹But Mary kept thinking about all this and wondering what it meant. ²⁰As the shepherds returned to their sheep, they were praising God and saying wonderful things about him. Everything they had seen and heard was just as the angel had said. (CEV)

John 1: ¹¹He came into his own world, but his own nation did not welcome him. ¹²Yet some people accepted him and put their faith in him. So he gave them the right to be the children of God. ¹³They were not God's children by nature or because of any human desires. God himself was the one who made them his children. ¹⁴The Word became a human being and lived here with us. We saw his true glory, the glory of the only Son of the Father. From him all the kindness and all the truth of God have come down to us. (CEV)

Philippians 2: ⁶Christ was truly God. But he did not try to remain equal with God.⁷He gave up everything and became a slave, when he became like one of us.⁸Christ was humble. He obeyed God and even died on a cross. ⁹Then God gave Christ the highest place and honored his name above all others (CEV)

1. What was the main reason that God sent Jesus to live on earth as a baby and then as an adult?
2. Why did many people of Jesus' own nation reject Him and other accept Him?
3. How would you have felt if you had been a shepherd and angels came to you at night?
4. What happens when we talk about our own lives in a group and compare ourselves to Jesus?
