How Did Jesus Draw Out the Best in People?
Ice-breaker: Describe some of the poor and sick people you knewas a child.

Luke 10: 2He said to them: A large crop is in thefields, but there are only a few workers. Ask the LORD in charge of theharvest to send out workers to bring it in. (CEV)

Luke 12: 32My little group of disciples, don't beafraid! Your Father wants to give you the kingdom. (CEV)

Luke 13: 30There the ones who are now least important will be the most important, and those who are now most important will beleast important. (CEV)

Luke 14: 11If you put yourself above others, you will be put down. But if you humble yourself, you will be honored. (CEV)

Luke 15: 7Jesus said, "In the same way there is more happiness in heaven because of one sinner who turns to God than over ninety-nine good people who don't need to." (CEV)

Luke 16: 15The things that most people think are important are worthless as far as God is concerned  (CEV)

Luke 18: 15Some people brought their little children for Jesus to bless. But when his disciples saw them doing this, they told the people to stop bothering him. 16So Jesus called the children over to him and said, "Let the children come to me! Don't try to stop them. People who are like these children belong to God's kingdom. 17 Youwill never get into God's kingdom unless you enter it like a child!" (CEV)

Matthew 9: 10Later, Jesus and his disciples were having dinner at Matthew's house. Many tax collectors and other sinners were also there. 11Some Pharisees asked Jesus' disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and other sinners?" 12Jesusheard them and answered, "Healthy people don't need a doctor, but sickpeople do. 13Go and learn what the Scriptures mean when theysay, 'Instead of offering sacrifices to me, I want you to be merciful toothers.' I didn't come to invite good people to be my followers. I cameto invite sinners." (CEV)

1. What are some ways that Jesus showed the value of people that wethink of as not very important?
2. Why did many of the Jewish people and leaders feel that they weremore righteous than others?
3. How can we make the same mistake today of thinking that Christiansare better than non-Christians?
4. How can we show each other the great danger of exalting ourselvesand discounting the value of others?
