Source of Broken Promises
Galatians 5: 19People's desires make them give in
to immoral ways, filthy thoughts, and shameful deeds. 20They
worship idols, practice witchcraft, hate others, and are hard to get along
with. People become jealous, angry, and selfish. They not only argue and
cause trouble, but they are 21envious. They get drunk, carry
on at wild parties, and do other things as well. I told you before, and
I am telling you again: No one who does these things will share in the
blessings of God's kingdom. (CEV)
James 3: 14But if your heart is full of bitter jealousy and selfishness, don't brag or lie to cover up the truth. 15That kind of wisdom doesn't come from above. It is earthly and selfish and comes from the devil himself. 16Whenever people are jealous and selfish, they cause trouble and do all sorts of cruel things.
Power for Keeping Promises
Galatians 5: 22God's Spirit makes us loving, happy,
peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, 23gentle, and self-controlled.
There is no law against behaving in any of these ways. 24And
because we belong to Christ Jesus, we have killed our selfish feelings
and desires. 25God's Spirit has given us life, and so we should
follow the Spirit. 26But don't be conceited or make others jealous
by claiming to be better than they are.
James 3: 13Are there any of you wise or sensible? Then show it by living right and by being humble and wise in everything you do..... 17But the wisdom that comes from above leads us to be pure, friendly, gentle, sensible, kind, helpful, genuine, and sincere. 18When peacemakers plant seeds of peace, they will harvest justice. (CEV)
Philippians 2: 12.... So work with fear and trembling to discover what it really means to be saved. 13God is working in you to make you willing and able to obey him.
1 What does God's Spirit do to help us think of resolutions
that we can make and keep?
2 Explain why Jesus said, "When you make a promise, say
only 'Yes' or 'No.'" See Matt. 5:37 (CEV)
3 Tell us about one New Year's resolution that you are
thinking of making this year.
