2 Samuel 1: ²⁵Our warriors have fallen in the heat of battle, and Jonathan lies dead on the hills of Gilboa. ²⁶Jonathan, I miss you most! I loved you like a brother. You were truly loyal to me, more faithful than a wife to her husband. (CEV)

Proverbs 27: ¹⁷Just as iron sharpens iron, friends sharpen the minds of each other. (CEV)

Proverbs 17: ¹⁷A friend is always a friend, and relatives are born to share our troubles  (CEV)

Proverbs 18: ²⁴Some friends don't help, but a true friend is closer than your own family. (CEV)

Proverbs 27: ¹⁰Don't desert an old friend of your family or visit your relatives when you are in trouble. A friend nearby is better than relatives far away. (CEV)

Luke 15: ²So the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law of Moses started grumbling, "This man is friendly with sinners. He even eats with them." (CEV)

John 15: ¹³The greatest way to show love for friends is to die for them. ¹⁴And you are my friends, if you obey me. ¹⁵Servants don't know what their master is doing, and so I don't speak to you as my servants. I speak to you as my friends, and I have told you everything that my Father has told me. (CEV)

Romans 12: ¹⁶Be friendly with everyone. Don't be proud and feel that you are smarter than others. Make friends with ordinary people. (CEV)

James 3: ¹⁷But the wisdom that comes from above leads us to be pure, friendly, gentle, sensible, kind, helpful, genuine, and sincere.(CEV)

James 4: ⁴.... Don't you know that if you love the world, you are God's enemies? And if you decide to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God. (CEV)

2. What is so inspiring and heartwarming about the friendship of David and Jonathan?
3. How do friends sharpen the minds of each other and become even closer?
4. When the Jewish teachers and leaders grumbled about Jesus' friends, what does that show us?
5. Tell us how your family climate taught you to be friendly even with criticism and adversity.
