Growing A Heart That Seeks For God                     grp200
It's Good To Mourn For The Right Reasons
Ice-Breaker: Describe a time in your life when during sorrow you and your family felt blessed.

Psalms 50: 23The sacrifice that honors me is a thankful heart. Obey me, and I, your God, will show my power to save. (CEV)

Psalms 51: 17The way to please you is to feel sorrow deep in our hearts. This is the kind of sacrifice you won't refuse. (CEV)

Ecclesiastes 7: 4A sensible person mourns, but fools always laugh. (CEV)

Isaiah 61: 2.... The LORD has sent me to comfort those who mourn, (CEV)

Matthew 5: 4God blesses those people who grieve. They will find comfort!  (CEV)

Luke 6: 20Jesus looked at his disciples and said:.... 21.... God will bless you people who are crying. You will laugh! 22God will bless you when others hate you and won't have anything to do with you. God will bless you when people insult you and say cruel things about you, all because you are a follower of the Son of Man. 23Long ago your own people did these same things to the prophets. So when this happens to you, be happy and jump for joy! You will have a great reward in heaven. (CEV)

2 Corinthians 1: 3Praise God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! The Father is a merciful God, who always gives us comfort. 4He comforts us when we are in trouble, so that we can share that same comfort with others in trouble. 5We share in the terrible sufferings of Christ, but also in the wonderful comfort he gives. 6We suffer in the hope that you will be comforted and saved. And because we are comforted, you will also be comforted, as you patiently endure suffering like ours. 7You never disappoint us. You suffered as much as we did, and we know that you will be comforted as we were.
8My friends, I want you to know what a hard time we had in Asia. Our sufferings were so horrible and so unbearable that death seemed certain. 9In fact, we felt sure that we were going to die. But this made us stop trusting in ourselves and start trusting God, who raises the dead to life. 10God saved us from the threat of death, and we are sure that he will do it again and again. (CEV)

1. Why should it be better to experience sorrow than to always expect fun, joy and laughter?
2. When God saves us from the threat of death or a painful sickness, what does that teach us?
3. How does a thankful heart and a heart in deep sorrow work together to please God?
4. What are some ways that God gives to us the same wonderful comfort that Paul experienced?
5. Explain how you were helped by sharing your concerns with those in your small group.
