Growing A Heart That Seeks For God                     grp205
Dealing With The Bad Influences Of Our Culture
Ice_Breaker: Tell how you were able to overcome a bad influence in your life.

1 John 2: 15Don't love the world or anything that belongs to the world. If you love the world, you cannot love the Father. 16Our foolish pride comes from this world, and so do our selfish desires and our desire to have everything we see. None of this comes from the Father. 17The world and the desires it causes are disappearing. But if we obey God, we will live forever. (CEV)

Isaiah 30: 15The holy LORD God of Israel had told all of you, "I will keep you safe if you turn back to me and calm down. I will make you strong if you quietly trust me." Then you stubbornly 16said, "No! We will safely escape on speedy horses." (CEV)

Proverbs 4: 23Carefully guard your thoughts because they are the source of true life. (CEV)

John 7: 37.... Jesus stood up and shouted, "If you are thirsty, come to me and drink! 38Have faith in me, and you will have life_giving water flowing from deep inside you, just as the Scriptures say." 39Jesus was talking about the Holy Spirit, who would be given to everyone that had faith in him. (CEV)

Matthew 11: 28If you are tired from carrying heavy burdens, come to me and I will give you rest. 29Take the yoke I give you. Put it on your shoulders and learn from me. I am gentle and humble, and you will find rest.30This yoke is easy to bear, and this burden is light. (CEV)

Matthew 16: 25If you want to save your life, you will destroy it. But if you give up your life for me, you will find it. 26What will you gain, if you own the whole world but destroy yourself? What would you give to get back your soul? (CEV)

Romans 8: 5People who are ruled by their desires think only of themselves. Everyone who is ruled by the Holy Spirit thinks about spiritual things. 6If our minds are ruled by our desires, we will die. But if our minds are ruled by the Spirit, we will have life and peace. 7Our desires fight against God, because they do not and cannot obey God's laws. 8If we follow our desires, we cannot please God....
10But Christ lives in you. So you are alive because God has accepted you, even though your bodies must die because of your sins. 11Yet God raised Jesus to life! God's Spirit now lives in you, and he will raise you to life by his Spirit. (CEV)

1. Why are we often in such a rush to do so many things that are not really important in the end?
2. When we study and think about the life and teachings of Jesus, what becomes most important?
3. How can we save the best parts of our lives by giving up some things we want very much?
4. What happens to us if we don't work with God's help to control our selfish desires?
5. Explain why Christ puts relationships with other people at the top of His priorities.
