Matthew 5: 27You know the commandment which says,
"Be faithful in marriage." 28But I tell you that if you look
at another woman and want her, you are already unfaithful in your thoughts.
29If
your right eye causes you to sin, poke it out and throw it away. It is
better to lose one part of your body, than for your whole body to end up
in hell. 30If your right hand causes you to sin, chop it off
and throw it away! It is better to lose one part of your body, than for
your whole body to be thrown into hell.
31You have been taught that a man who divorces his wife
must write out divorce papers for her. 32But I tell you not
to divorce your wife unless she has committed some terrible sexual sin.
If you divorce her, you will cause her to be unfaithful, just as any man
who marries her is guilty of taking another man's wife. (CEV)
Matthew 19: 4Jesus answered, "Don't you know that
in the beginning the Creator made a man and a woman? 5That's
why a man leaves his father and mother and gets married. He becomes like
one person with his wife. 6Then they are no longer two people,
but one. And no one should separate a couple that God has joined together."
7The Pharisees asked Jesus, "Why did
Moses say that a man could write out divorce papers and send his wife away?"
8Jesus
replied, "You are so heartless! That's why Moses allowed you to divorce
your wife. But from the beginning God did not intend it to be that way.
9I
say that if your wife has not committed some terrible sexual sin, you must
not divorce her to marry someone else. If you do, you are unfaithful."
10The disciples said, "If that's how
it is between a man and a woman, it's better not to get married." 11Jesus
told them, "Only those people who have been given the gift of staying single
can accept this teaching. 12Some people are unable to marry
because of birth defects or because of what someone has done to their bodies.
Others stay single for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Anyone who can
accept this teaching should do so." (CEV)
1 Corinthians 13: 4Love is kind and patient, never
jealous, boastful, proud, or 5rude. Love isn't selfish or quick
tempered. It doesn't keep a record of wrongs that others do. 6Love
rejoices in the truth, but not in evil. 7Love is always supportive,
loyal, hopeful, and trusting. 8Love never fails! ..
11When we were children, we thought and
reasoned as children do. But when we grew up, we quit our childish ways.
12Now
all we can see of God is like a cloudy picture in a mirror. Later we will
see him face to face. We don't know everything, but then we will, just
as God completely understands us. 13For now there are faith,
hope, and love. But of these three, the greatest is love. (CEV)
1. Why is purity and faithfulness so important to our Father in Heaven,
and to us also?
2. When we grow up and become more like Jesus how does that help us
see God as He is.
3. How does faithfulness in marriage affect all of our other relationships?
4. What are some good reasons for remaining single if we can do it
without falling into sin?
5. Describe how one of your friends showed their love to you and to
others.
