Matthew 8: ¹⁴Jesus went to the home of Peter, where he found that Peter's mother-in-law was sick in bed with fever. ¹⁵He took her by the hand, and the fever left her. Then she got up and served Jesus a meal. ¹⁶That evening many people with demons in them were brought to Jesus. And with only a word he forced out the evil spirits and healed everyone who was sick. ¹⁷So God's promise came true, just as the prophet Isaiah had said, "He healed our diseases and made us well." ¹⁸When Jesus saw the crowd, he went across Lake Galilee. ¹⁹A teacher of the Law of Moses came up to him and said, "Teacher, I'll go anywhere with you!" ²⁰Jesus replied, "Foxes have dens, and birds have nests. But the Son of Man doesn't have a place to call his own." ²¹Another disciple said to Jesus, "Lord, let me wait till I bury my father." ²²Jesus answered, "Come with me, and let the dead bury their dead." (CEV)
1. Why did Jesus expect such great loyalty in those who wanted to follow Him?

Luke 9: ⁶¹Then someone said to Jesus, "I want to go with you, Lord, but first let me go back and take care of things at home." ⁶²Jesus answered, "Anyone who starts plowing and keeps looking back isn't worth a thing to God's kingdom!" (CEV)
2. How does God help us to leave familiar surroundings and risk going where He want us?

Mark 1: ³⁵Very early the next morning, Jesus got up and went to a place where he could be alone and pray. ³⁶Simon and the others started looking for him. ³⁷And when they found him, they said, "Everyone is looking for you!" ³⁸Jesus replied, "We must go to the nearby towns, so that I can tell the good news to those people. This is why I have come." ³⁹Then Jesus went to Jewish meeting places everywhere in Galilee, where he preached and forced out demons. (CEV)
3. What made Jesus leave a place where people were expecting to get something from Him?

Matthew 4: ¹³.... Jesus moved to Capernaum... ¹⁴So God's promise came true, just as the prophet Isaiah had said, ¹⁵"Listen, lands of Zebulun and Naphtali, lands along the road to the sea and east of the Jordan! Listen Galilee, land of the Gentiles! ¹⁶Although your people live in darkness, they will see a bright light. Although they live in the shadow of death, a light will shine on them." (CEV)
4. Who were the Gentiles, and why did Jesus come especially to bring them Good News?

Isaiah 9: ⁶A child has been born for us. We have been given a son who will be our ruler. His names will be Wonderful Advisor and Mighty God, Eternal Father and Prince of Peace. ⁷His power will never end; peace will last forever. (CEV)

Isaiah 61: ⁶¹ The Spirit of the LORD God has taken control of me! The LORD has chosen and sent me to tell the oppressed the good news, to heal the brokenhearted, and to announce freedom for prisoners and captives. (CEV)
5. When Jesus came into this world as a baby, why did this upset the leaders of His people?
