Matthew 9: 14One day some followers of John the Baptist
came and asked Jesus, "Why do we and the Pharisees often go without eating,
while your disciples never do?" 15Jesus answered: The
friends of a bridegroom don't go without eating while he is still with
them. But the time will come when he will be taken from them. Then they
will go without eating.
16No one uses a new piece of cloth to
patch old clothes. The patch would shrink and tear a bigger hole. 17No
one pours new wine into old wineskins. The wine would swell and burst the
old skins. Then the wine would be lost, and the skins would be ruined.
New wine must be put into new wineskins. Both the skins and the wine will
then be safe. (CEV)
1. Why did Jesus use stories like these to change the way people
think and behave?
Philippians 2: 12Therefore, my dear friends, as you
have always obeyed--not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence--continue
to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13for it
is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.
(NIV)
2. What are some differences between what we work out and what
God works in us?
Colossians 3: 10Each of you is now a new person. You
are becoming more and more like your Creator, and you will understand him
better. 11.... Christ is all that matters, and he lives in all
of us. (CEV)
3. Who of us are becoming more and more like Christ, and what
helps us the most?
Romans 8: 11.... God raised Jesus to life! God's Spirit
now lives in you, and he will raise you to life by his Spirit. 12My
dear friends, we must not live to satisfy our desires. (CEV)
4. When we allow the Holy Spirit to lead us, what do we have
to do with our bodily desires?
Romans 12: 2Don't be like the people of this world,
but let God change the way you think. Then you will know how to do everything
that is good and pleasing to him. (CEV)
5. How do the daily practices of society act as barriers to
keep us from changing our thinking?
Psalm 119: 9Young people can live a clean life by
obeying your word. 10I worship you with all my heart. Don't
let me walk away from your commands. 11I treasure your word
above all else.. (CEV)
6. What is there about God's Message that makes us treasure
and love it more than anything?
John 15: 7Stay joined to me and let my teachings become
part of you. Then you can pray for whatever you want, and your prayer will
be answered. 8When you become fruitful disciples of mine, my
Father will be honored. (CEV)
7. Tell us what works best for you when you try to become fruitful
