Matthew 10: 40Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me.
And anyone who welcomes me also welcomes the one who sent me. 41Anyone
who welcomes a prophet, just because that person is a prophet, will be
given the same reward as a prophet. Anyone who welcomes a good person,
just because that person is good, will be given the same reward as a good
person. 42And anyone who gives one of my most humble followers
a cup of cool water, just because that person is my follower, will surely
be rewarded. (CEV)
1. What are some reasons why Christ promises rewards to friendly,
helpful people
John 15: 12Now I tell you to love each other, as I
have loved you. 13The greatest way to show love for friends
is to die for them. 14And you are my friends, if you obey me.
15Servants don't know what their master is doing, and so I don't
speak to you as my servants. I speak to you as my friends, and I have told
you everything that my Father has told me. 16You did not choose
me. I chose you and sent you out to produce fruit, the kind of fruit that
will last. Then my Father will give you whatever you ask for in my name.
17So I command you to love each other. (CEV)
2. Why does Jesus connect being friends with Him and producing
fruit that will last?
James 2: 22Now you see how Abraham's faith and deeds
worked together. He proved that his faith was real by what he did. 23This
is what the Scriptures mean by saying, "Abraham had faith in God, and God
was pleased with him." That's how Abraham became God's friend. (CEV)
3. How do our faith and deeds work together to please God, as
they did with Abraham?
Proverbs 15: 30A friendly smile makes you happy, and
good news makes you feel strong.
Proverbs 16: 7When we please the LORD, even our enemies
make friends with us.
Proverbs 17: 9You will keep your friends if you forgive
them, but you will lose your friends if you keep talking about what they
did wrong.... 17A friend is always a friend....
Proverbs 18: 24Some friends don't help, but a true
friend is closer than your own family. (CEV)
4. When we really do treat people as friends, what happens to
us and those around us?
James 3: 17But the wisdom that comes from above leads
us to be pure, friendly, gentle, sensible, kind, helpful, genuine, and
sincere.
Proverbs 27: 17Just as iron sharpens iron, friends
sharpen the minds of each other. (CEV)
5. What are some things friends do together that also bring
blessings to others?
Ecclesiastes 4: 9You are better off to have a friend
than to be all alone, because then you will get more enjoyment out of what
you earn. 10If you fall, your friend can help you up. But if
you fall without having a friend nearby, you are really in trouble. (CEV)
6. Tell us how you have been helped through difficult circumstances
by friends.
