Matthew 16: 13.... he asked them, "What do people
say about the Son of Man?" 14The disciples answered, "Some people
say you are John the Baptist or maybe Elijah or Jeremiah or some other
prophet." 15Then Jesus asked them, "But who do you say I am?"
16Simon Peter spoke up, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the
living God." (CEV)
1. Why is it hard for people to recognize who Christ is?
Philippians 3: 7But Christ has shown me that what
I once thought was valuable is worthless.
8Nothing is as wonderful
as knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. I have given up everything else and count
it all as garbage. All I want is Christ 9and to know that I
belong to him. I could not make myself acceptable to God by obeying the
Law of Moses. God accepted me simply because of my faith in Christ. 10All
I want is to know Christ and the power that raised him to life. I want
to suffer and die as he did, 11so that somehow I also may be
raised to life. (CEV)
2. How could you value someone or something one day and not on the
next?
2 Corinthians 3: 18So our faces are not covered. They
show the bright glory of the Lord, as the LORD'S Spirit makes us more and
more like our glorious Lord. (CEV)
3. What is God doing all the time to help us become like and follow
in the steps of Jesus?
Colossians 3: 9.... You have given up your old way
of life with its habits. 10Each of you is now a new person.
You are becoming more and more like your Creator, and you will understand
him better. 11.... Christ is all that matters, and he lives
in all of us. 12God loves you and has chosen you as his own
special people. So be gentle, kind, humble, meek, and patient. (CEV)
4. Describe what it is like to be a new person.
Hebrews 2: 17He had to be one of us, so that he could
serve God as our merciful and faithful high priest and sacrifice himself
for the forgiveness of our sins. 18And now that Jesus has suffered
and was tempted, he can help anyone else who is tempted. (CEV)
5. When we are tempted, how do we benefit from what we know about Jesus'
temptations?
Hebrews 2: 10.... God .... made Jesus perfect by suffering,
as Jesus led many of God's children to be saved and to share in his glory.
11Jesus and the people he makes holy all belong to the same
family. That is why he isn't ashamed to call them his brothers and sisters.
(CEV)
6. Where can we best grow into a family of brothers and sisters of
Jesus?
2 Corinthians 4: 16We never give up. Our bodies are
gradually dying, but we ourselves are being made stronger each day. 17These
little troubles are getting us ready for an eternal glory that will make
all our troubles seem like nothing. 18Things that are seen don't
last forever, but things that are not seen are eternal. That's why we keep
our minds on the things that cannot be seen. (CEV)
7. How do you feel about this eternal glory that will make all our
troubles seem worth it?
